I've been meaning to do a blog dedicated to all the graduates for weeks and here it is!
To say the last year and a half has been difficult is a huge understatement. Lock downs, online or distance learning, not being able to travel to see your family, losing your job or being restricted in when or how you work. Even worse, you or your family becoming ill with Covid 19! Last year was rough, and as I hear every day, 'we can see the light at the end of the tunnel'. Who knew how very long this tunnel would be?
A year ago in March I was not even allowed to photograph graduation portraits in my studio. I could never have imagined this! I have never NOT been allowed to work! Here we are a year later and still the graduation ceremonies are either being done very differently or not at all in some cases. Fortunately here in PEI we have had very few work related restrictions since last spring and I've had the pleasure of meeting many awesome young people who have succeeded in completing their studies and are now celebrating this big milestone with professional grad portraits.
My daughter, Jillian is graduating from NBCCD with a diploma in Fashion Design in Fredericton, NB. Her celebration ceremony is this Friday. I'm pretty gutted that I can not be there due to travel restrictions. I've tried every possible legal avenue and there's no way. It is so difficult knowing it's a short 3.5 hours and I could see and hug my daughter, my best friend. I'm incredibly proud of her for persevering through all of the challenges over the past years.
Two years ago, after just one year at college she found out there's a graduation ceremony for completing the Foundation of Visual Arts program! I thought it was a bit strange but decided to head on over with my husband. It was so fun and so emotional. They had a full lecture hall with parents and friends, the graduates all gowned up with their decorated caps (art school thing lol) walked down the street together and into the theatre. I am holding onto those memories and photos. This summer I will do some epic grad portraits of her, not to mention fashion shoots with some of her clothing collection she created when she can finally come and visit us!
Here's a few from her graduation 2 years ago. So great that we got to attend this one!
I photograph mostly Holland College, UPEI, Charlottetown Rural and Colonel Grey graduation portraits. If you can access your school's gown I'm happy to do any school's grads of course! I have photographed several new nursing grads as well. We sure need nurses now more than ever so thank you nurses! I don't book my grads back to back so there's plenty of time to make sure you are happy with your grad portraits before you leave the studio.
I have several backgrounds and different lighting and modifiers which I adjust as no two faces are alike, well unless you have an identical twin! Im sure to take the time to make my subjects comfortable, fix hair and pose and light them so they look their absolute best. I only have plain black grad gowns at my studio so it is necessary to borrow or rent the neckpiece or gown from your school.
Thank you to everyone who chose me as their graduation photographer to capture this milestone. I wish you all a fantastic future!
